From John Woodward, IDE First Vice President
Now that you have achieved membership of your desired institution you may feel that CPD is something that you are not bothered about. However I would say that, to be not bothered is a major mistake as more and more clients are now seeking proof of, not only membership of institutes such as The Institute of Demolition Engineers, but proof of CPD within the institute and in your working life.
As you will be asked for proof of CPD throughout 2010 and beyond why not decide now to make CPD one of your goals for this year. Attend as many seminars or training days that you can, record your attendance and use those records to prove your CPD.
The CPD record will allow you to demonstrate to potential clients that you take institute membership seriously, that your industry knowledge is up to date and that you are dedicated to your status as an institute member.
With two major seminars a year and numerous regional meetings the opportunity to obtain IDE CPD points has never been better so make a decision to attend as many as possible and keep recording those points as “Points make competence”.

Emma is Temp of the Month
We hear today that Emma Piotrowski, who is our part-time Events Secretary, through the Jobshop@Kent university agency, has been selected as their Temp of the Month for January. They applaud her "dedication, commitment and reliability to the assignment" and regard her as an excellent ambassador for their service.
Valerie Stroud, IDE National Secretary, said, "We congratulate Emma and hope she will continue to work for us while she is at the University of Kent studying Spanish and Business Studies. She is gathering a portfolio of valuable experience as well as contributing ideas to help the efficiency of the IDE office."
Becky Kellaway, Jobshop Sales Coordinator, explains the purpose of the agency:
"jobshop@kent is here to help students at the University of Kent find paid employment during their studies; the aim is to help alleviate financial hardship, whilst offering the opportunity to gain valuable work experience. With the introduction of tuition fees and the abolition of grants, students have come under growing pressure to meet at least some of the costs of their education.
An increasingly competitive graduate employment market has also made it essential for students to gain practical experience and work-related skills while studying. jobshop@kent provides students with a one-stop service for part-time and temporary vacancies; it also addresses the recruitment needs of local business. The service is extended to students at the University of Kent at Medway and higher education students at associated colleges throughout the county.
From a student's perspective, jobshop@kent looks very similar to a job centre; the boards in its dedicated office are adorned with cards detailing current vacancies and a team of staff is available to provide application details and other advice when necessary. jobshop@kent also maintains a bank of information on issues such as taxation, National Insurance and writing a CV."

Unconventional Demolition
Yes, it's a 12 storey building lying on its back
Here, courtesy of Daryl Smith FIDE, is the story of how it got in this state
The apartment block was constructed and all was well
The next step in the plan was to excavate in order to construct an underground garage. The spoil was piled up on the other side of the building
Unfortunately it rained, and rained and rained. Water seeped into the ground
The building began to tilt. Then it shifted and the hollow concrete pilings were snapped due to uneven lateral pressures.
Ooops! Oh, dear!!
If the apartment blocks had been closer together there would have been a domino effect.

An expert lends a hand
Martin Bjerregaard MIDE of Golder Associates (UK) Ltd has flown into Haiti to assist the authorities there with assessing the safest means of removing the debris and planning for the future.
Martin was also on hand to clear up after the devastating results of the flooding in New Orleans.
"It is good to be able to use my experience and expertise to help in these situations and sometimes there are moments of happiness when, for example, families are reunited or special belongings found, but, for most of the time the work is harrowing. One has a huge sense of what ordinary people have lost in such a disaster."
Martin would like to hear from Demolition Engineers and their companies who would like to help him either through donations or providing their time. Please contact the IDE Office in the first instance.
Don't forget that the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) are also collecting donations.

In sight for demolition - Richard pulls the trigger.
Richard Comley FIDE has brought his company, C G Comley and Sons Ltd, to BBC news to herald a new addition to the Fort Nelson (Royal Armouries) museum, Fareham.
Not satisfied with any old explosion, a World War II Sexton self-propelling gun was trained on the 1930s bungalow that had to be demolished to make way for a brand new Visitors Centre.
Richard comment, "When the opportunity occurs to promote a prestigious new development in a spectacular way, it cannot be missed. We were glad to be involved at the outset of this project and wish it well.

2010's first CSCS Card holder
December was a very good month for Doug Fox. He attended for his Professional Interview on the 11th and IDE President, Terry Quarmby, with 1st Vice President, John Woodward, were pleased to congratulate him on attaining Full Membership. The diary and portfolio that Doug submitted prior to the interview was impressive, showing experience in a wide variety of demolition projects and a commitment to continuing professional development.
Doug has been a regular at IDE Seminars and Regional meetings, giving him the required number of IDE-CPD points to apply for the CSCS Demolition Engineer Card on becoming a Full Member. Doug now steps proudly into 2010 bearing 'MIDE' after his name and the prestigious card in his pocket.
There are a number of Associate Members who have completed two years in that grade and who should be looking to submit their diary and portfolio. If you are among them please add the finishing touches and get them off to the National Secretary as soon as possible so they can be considered at the next Membership Committee meeting on 4 March. If all is in order you will be invited for interview. If you would like some help with your presentation please contact Wayne Bagnall, IDE Membership Adviser.
